Ronaldo may continue to play for Portugal

The Al-Nassr forward started in all of Portugal’s five games in the tournament in Germany.

However, Ronaldo failed to score in open play for the first time in a major international tournament.

He could have been the oldest goalscorer in EURO history, but that record is currently held by Croatia’s Luka Modric.

The Portugal captain spoke to his fans for the first time since his team absorbed a 5-3 penalty loss to France in the quarterfinals.

“We wanted more. We deserved more. For us, for each one of you. For Portugal,” Ronaldo wrote on Instagram.

“We are grateful for everything you have given us and for everything we have achieved so far. On and off the field, I am sure that this legacy will be honoured and will continue to be built. Together.”

“Too soon”

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez said it would be “too soon” for Ronaldo to retire from international football entirely.

Ronaldo has scored 130 goals on 212 appearances for Portugal since making his debut with the national team in 2003.

“It’s too soon and raw after the match to talk about that and there have been no individual decisions made,” he said this after Portugal’s elimination against France.
