De La Fuente praises Spain U-23 for claiming Olympic gold

Spain enjoys great 2024 run in football

2024 has been a remarkable year for Spanish football.

Luis De La Fuente first guided the senior national team to victory in the EURO 2024 last month.

The Spanish under-19 team followed suit, claiming the European Championship title this summer.

Finally, Santi Denia led the under-23 squad to the country’s first Olympic gold medal in men’s football since 1992.

De La Fuente lauds Spain for their Olympic gold run

De La Fuente, who coached the under-23 team to a silver medal finish at the Tokyo Games three years ago, stated that Spanish football deserves more respect.

“We are not aware of what we have achieved this year and we do not value Spanish football enough. Let’s get rid of our prejudices, really, almost no team can achieve this,” De la Fuente told reporters.

“Also the under-19 team, under-21 European runners-up last year … Let’s give importance to what has been achieved today, this is a historic night, we have lived an epic story that will go down in the history of the Olympics and Spanish sport.”
