DJOKOVIC, ALCARAZ HURDLE EARLY MELBOURNE OPENING TESTS
Djokovic and Alcaraz hurdled their early opening tests in Melbourne to progress into the next round.
Furthermore, Djokovic overcame an opening set letdown to beat American Nishesh Basvareddy, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.
Moreover, the Serbian 24-time Grand Slam champion emerged victorious in his first game with new coach Andy Murray.
Alcaraz had some rough moments before pulling off a 6-1, 7-5. 6-1 victory over Kazakhstan’s Alexander Shevchenko.
The Spanish world No.3 was dragged to a shaky middle set before he got his groove back in the third to blitz past his opponent.
NAVARRO ADVANCES AFTER OUTLASTING STEARNS
Moreover, Navarro advanced after she outlasted fellow American Peyton Stearns, 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 7-5.
Furthermore, last year’s US Open semifinalist needed three hours and 20 minutes – the longest match in her career so far- to put away Stearns.
It was the first women’s singles match to past 5-all in all three sets since Amy Frazier beat Meghann Shaughnessy, 7-5, 5-7, 7-5, at the 2005 French Open.
“I just kept telling myself to make the most of what I had today,” Navarro said.
“Maybe it wasn’t my best, but she put up a really good fight. Really happy to just get the win,” she added.
KYRGIOS HINTS OF RETIREMENT AFTER STRAIGHTS SETS LOSS TO FEARNLEY
Furthermore, Nick Kyrgios hinted of retirement after his opening round defeat to Brit Jacob Fearnley.
Moreover, the 29-year-old Australian admitted he doesn’t see himself “playing a singles match” at home again after his 7-6 (3), 6-3, 7-6 (1) setback to Fearnley.
“For (the fans) to really see me fighting and still giving me that energy, it meant a lot, because I feel like I’ve given my life to tennis and I’ve tried to give them a show every time I go out there,” Kyrgios said.
“Realistically, I can’t see myself playing a singles match here (Australia) again,” he added.
Kyrgios is still scheduled to play men’s doubles in Melbourne with compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis.
