EURO 2024: De La Fuente says Spain players believed in him

Spain believed in De La Fuente

La Roja claimed a record fourth European Championship on Sunday after beating England 2-1 on Sunday in Berlin.

Spain finished the tournament without conceding in any of their seven games played, beating prior title holders Italy and hosts Germany.

De La Fuente’s side also defeated pre-tournament favorites France and England to claim the EURO 2024 title.

“I was sure that my players believed in me. For a year and a half they have been infallible,” De la Fuente told reporters.

“The only thing that I was worried about was that the players believed in me and were convinced by what we said.”

Proud of his squad

De La Fuente said he was proud of his team for their amazing performance.

“Now it’s all happiness, pride and enjoying this moment that we have earned. Nobody gave us anything for free,” he said.

“This group of players can keep growing and improving because they don’t get tired of it, of competing, of trying to win, of making you proud of them, from the first day until the last, now.”

“I am happy for my country, for Spain, for the excitement we generated. I hope (people) feel the same pride, thanks to all these footballers.”

“We have been faithful to an idea that the players rolled out and understood fantastically,” said De la Fuente.

Young wingers Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams controlled the pace while being aggressive on the ball.

Meanwhile, RB Leipzig midfielder Dani Olmo was among the six players who took home the Golden Boot award in EURO 2024.

“We have more versatility in our game, taking advantage of the characteristics of the players,” De La Fuente said.

“We have pace on the wings, control and possession in the middle, and a very solid defence, very secure — that has given us a lot of balance in all aspects of the game.”
