Deschamps defends Mbappe from doubters
Mbappe, 25, has only scored once in the tournament, which is a penalty in the final group game against Poland.
France reached the semifinals round without scoring a goal from open play.
The Les Bleus team captain asked to be substituted in extra time of their quarterfinal win over Portugal on penalties.
The criticism towards Mbappe only grew louder, but Deschamps quickly came into the defense of the Real Madrid’s latest player.
“Don’t you think he has already made enough history, with what he has done so far? He wants to make even more history,” he said on the French television show Telefoot on Sunday.
“We did everything we could with him, with the medical staff, to get him to be here. During the preparation, he had a little back problem, too, but Kylian is here.”
Will Mbappe start vs Spain?
France will now face the mighty Spain in the semifinals on Tuesday in Munich.
Spain has won all of their five games in the tournament.
Mbappe has been forced to play with a mask after breaking his nose in a collision with Kevin Danso in France’s opening group game against Austria.
Deschamps suggested that Mbappe could play off the bench if he is not entirely fit.
“Even if he’s not 100%, I know very well that for the opponent, knowing he’s playing makes them think and forces them to adapt,” Deschamps said.
