France beats Portugal in EURO 2024 quarterfinals
France converted all their kicks in a shootout, with Theo Hernandez nailing the winning kick after substitute Joao Felix hit the post.
Ousmane Dembele, Youssouf Fofana, Jules Kounde, and Bradley Barcola all stroke their spot kicks for Les Bleus.
Both France and Portugal failed to convert their chances during the regular time.
All eyes had been on a superstar showdown Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe but both failed to make a difference, although the 39-year-old converted his spot-kick.
Meanwhile, the masked Mbappe had to exit the pitch after he was hit in the face by the ball midway through the second half.
The 26-year-old did not take part in the penalty shootout.
France goalkeeper Mike Maignan made an impact when he saved two goals from Bruno Fernandes and Vitinha.
However, Randal Kolo Muani’s shot was deflected inches wide by Ruben Dias.
The worst miss came from Ronaldo three minutes into extra time.
The worst miss came from Ronaldo three minutes into extra time when Francisco Conceicao saw him cut in on the byline and pull the ball back for his captain, only for him to miss his chance.
France heads to semis
France will now face Spain in the semifinals in Munich on Tuesday.
Interestingly, Didier Deschamps’ side entered the semis without scoring in open play at the tournament.
“You wonder what would have happened if we had scored goals. The opponent wasn’t that efficient either,” said the France coach.
“But you’re not telling me that we don’t deserve our place in the semi-final. But I would prefer to have a team that’s more efficient in goal scoring.”
End of Ronaldo’s era in EURO
Meanwhile, fans may have witnessed Ronaldo’s final appearance in the European Championship.
Should that be the case, the Al Nassr forward finishes his tenure with Portugal with 130 goals in 212 caps.
Ronaldo was also part of the Portuguese side that captured the 2016 EURO title in Paris.
