Mbappe avoids nose surgery
The newly-signed Real Madrid star collided with Austria’s Kevin Danso late in the Group D game at Dusseldorf Arena.
Mbappe was seen holding his bloodied nose while lying on the grass, which led the medical staff to bring him to the hospital.
Oliver Giroud replaced Mbappe in the 90th minute after the latter went down four minutes earlier as France held on.
There was initial concern that the 25-year-old might require surgery on his disfigured nose, but multiple reports suggested that he won’t need one.
Mbappe left the hospital at 1 a.m. local time and has rejoined the team.
However, Mbappe’s status for France’s next game against the Netherlands remains questionable.
Should Mbappe suit up for Les Blues, he will need to wear a protective mask for the entire tournament.
Deschamps hopes for the best
“He’s got a really bad nose,”said France manager Didier Deschamps. “We’ll have to wait and see, the medical staff are dealing with it. We’ll have to see what’s going to be done and then how long it will take. It’s very bad news for us tonight.
“Obviously, the French team with or without him, this is not the same thing. I hope he can be there.”
France won the game after an own goal by Austria’s Maximilian Wober, following a pass from Mbappe in the 38th minute.
“Happy with what the players did even if we missed opportunities to double the tally,” Deschamps said. “It was not perfect, but we were solid. We could have been more efficient offensively, but it’s good to start with a win.
“There’s quality and talent but being solid and working together is also important. We’re not going to be over-confident, but it’s a good start.”
