Lewandowski out for EURO 2024 opener

The country’s football federation confirmed the development.

The 35-year-old picked up the injury during a 2-1 friendly win over Turkey on Monday.

In the same fixture, Karol Siderski and Pawel Dawidowicz also suffered injuries, although both are expected to return to full training in a few days.

Polish team doctor Jacek Jaroszewski said they are doing all they can to ensure Lewandowski will be fit to face Austria on June 21.

“We examined three players who suffered injuries in the match against Turkey … [defender] Pawel Dawidowicz suffered a pulled quadriceps thigh muscle,” said Jaroszewski in a statement. “In the case of [striker] Karol Swiderski, an examination showed an ankle sprain without significant damage. Both players should return to full training within three to four days after the treatment.”

“Robert Lewandowski suffered a torn biceps femoris muscle, which will exclude him from participating in the first match of the tournament. We are doing everything so that Robert can play in the second match, against Austria.”

Huge blow for Lewandowski

Lewandowski’s absence is a huge blow for Poland.

The veteran striker has scored a total of 82 goals for his country.

In addition, the Barcelona star tallied 26 goals in 49 appearances, despite the club’s trophy-less season.

Poland conclude their group campaign against World Cup runners-up France on June 25.
