Slovenia cancels Eriksen in his EURO 2024 return

The Manchester United veteran made his European Championship return after he collapsed on the pitch against Finland in Denmark’s opening match of Euro 2021.

Eriksen completed his inspiring return with an opening goal for Denmark in the 17th minute in Stuttgart after he received a flicked pass from Jonas Wind inside the box.

However, Eriksen and Rasmund Holjund missed their chances of widening the gap for Kasper Hjulmand’s side.

Those misses proved to be costly, as Slovenia striker Benjamin Sesko gave Denmark a scare after thumped a shot off the post.

It was defender Erik Janza who equalized with a deflected shot that left Kasper Schmeichel stranded.

Janza’s scored Slovenia’s first European Championshipp goal in 24 years.

“We showed them too much respect in the first half,” said Slovenia coach Matjaz Kek.

“Many of my players have never played such a big competition. When we saw something was possible, they started playing. I think we will learn from this.”

EURO 2024 HIGHLIGHTS

Triumphant return for Eriksen

Despite Slovenia spoiling his return, the 32-year-old still took home the Player of the Match honors.

Eriksen said his opening goal of the match was a poetic moment for him.

“Well, it was nice [to score], it came at a good time,” Eriksen said.

“We had talked about scoring from a set-piece and we did and, unfortunately, the others did too. But we scored and got off to a good start.

“It was great with so many Danish fans.”
