Southgate addressed the boos from England diehards

England faced another EURO 2024 disappointment following their 0-0 draw with Slovenia on Tuesday.

Southgate’s side still emerged as group winners, thanks to Denmark also drawing with Serbia.

As a result, the Three Lions were booed during and after the game at the RheinEnergieSTADION.

When Southgate applauded the fans at the end of the game, he was met with loud boos, and some even threw beer cups towards him.

The 53-year old’s contract with the Footblall Association expires in December.

Some fans are questioning whether Southgate should still call the shots for England after eight years in charge.

“I understand it. I’m not going to back away from it. The most important thing here is that the supporters stay with the team,” Southgate said.

“I understand the narrative towards me and that’s better for than it being towards them. But it is creating an unusual environment to operate in. I’ve not seen any team qualify and receive similar.”

“I recognise that when you have moments at the end of the game, I’m asking the players to be fearless, I’m not going to back down from going over and thanking the fans who were brilliant during the game.

“They might feel differently towards me. But for me, we only will succeed if we are together. That energy is crucial for the team and it is so important they stay with the team, however they feel towards me.”

Managing expectations

England has the chance to bounce back in their next game in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday.

Their round-of-16 opponent will likely be one of the four best third-placed teams.

Although England thrived under Southgate for the past eight years, he understands that the team has to be composed under pressure.

“I think probably expectation. We’ve made England over the last six or seven years fun again. I think it has been enjoyable for the players. We’ve got to be very, very careful that it stays that way,” he said.
