Turkey survives Czechia to reach EURO 2024 last 16

Czechia’s hopes of advancing in the tournament slowly diminished when midfielder Antonin Barak catched his second yellow card.

Both teams pressed each other throughout the first half, but captain Hakan Calhanoglu gave Turkey its first goal in the 50th minute with a low shot past goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek.

Tomas Soucek immediately scored an equalizer from six yards out, and the game suddenly became wide open.

In the end, Cenk Tosun struck a game-winning goal in stoppage time, but Turkey’s celebration was short-lived.

Post-game brawl

All hell broke loose following the final whistle, as a melee ensued between players from both teams.

Czcechia substitute Tomas Chory received a red card, while yellow cards were also handed to other players.

Even Patrik Schick, the Czech Republic’s injured striker, also got a yellow card.

The referee showed 18 cards in total, two red and 16 yellow, setting a new Euros record.

Turkey enters Round-of-16

Turkey completes the Round-of-16 bracket, and will play Austria in the last 16 on July 2 in Leipzig.

Vincenzo Montella’s side reach the knockout stage in the major tournament for the first time since a run to the Euro 2008 semi-finals.

Meanwhile, Czechia, quarterfinalists in the last tournament, finished at the bottom of the Group F standings.

“We are always focused and hard-working, we deserve this qualification,” said Montella.

“We have suffered some criticism that was not deserved, and we overcame that.”

“I’m used to pressure, I don’t mind it, but I don’t like when pressure is put on my players.”
