Weghorst rescued Netherlands in EURO 2024 opener

Poland drew first blood at Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion with a header from Adam Buksa in the 16th minute.

Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo scored an equalizer in the 29th minute after his deflected shot flew past Wojciech Szczesny.

After the break, both teams kept the game close until the 83rd minute.

Poland were playing without Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski, who sat out in the opener due to a hamstring injury.

Weghorst, who entered the field in the 81st minute, emerged as the hero for Oranje in just his first touch of the game.

Koeman gives props to Weghorst, Gakpo

Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman gave his flowers to Gakpo and Weghorst for salvaging the squad in their first game in the tournament.

“Wout Weghorst was able to play and he has added value to the team. He has a different way of behaving and that is what we needed,” Koeman said.

“This should have been 4-1 in favour of us after one hour. We played very well but couldn’t finish opportunities.

“Cody Gakpo also played very well. He was dangerous and we should give him the ball more often.”
