FRITZ, RUNE MAY PICK TO PLAY MIXED DOUBLES THAN SINGLES IN US OPEN

Fritz and Rune may pick to play in the mixed doubles instead of singles.

The US Open unfolds in August.

Furthermore, Fritz was the first to hint of possibly playing in the mixed doubles, which drew criticism from fans.

Moreover, the American 27-yer-old world No.4 reached the US Open men’s singles final but he lost to No.1 Jannik Sinner.

Rune went to social media suggesting his response.

He reacted positively on the plan to move the mixed doubles a week earlier than the men’s singles.

“Interesting,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The Danish 21-year-old No14 was ousted in the men’s singles first round last year.

2024 MIXED DOUBLES CHAMPS SLAM US OPEN FORMAT CHANGE

2024 mixed doubles champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori slammed the controversial format change.

Moreover, the Italian pair described replacing the traditional schedule as a “pseudo-exhibition focused only on entertainment and show.”

Furthermore, they added it was a “profound injustice” that disrespected “an entire category of players.”

“We don’t know at the moment if we’ll have the chance to defend our title,” Errani and Vavassori wrote on Instagram.

“But we hope this will remain an isolated case and this type of policy will not be considered again in the future,” they added.

USTA EXECUTIVE DEFENDS MIXED DOUBLES CHANGE, SAYS PLAN SEEKS TO BOOST FAN BASE

A United States Tennis Association (USTA) executive defended the decision.

USTA chief executive officer and director Lew Sherr said that their plan seeks to boost the sport’s fan base.

Furthermore, she cited that the plan was to lure the sport’s top singles players.

Moreover, Sherr noted that the call to move mixed doubles to August 19 and singles on August 24 was to pace the players’ schedules.

“But the way to do that (boost tennis fan base) is to have the biggest names in the sport participating in doubles,” the official said.

“We’ve known and we’ve had conversations over the years, like, why don’t they participate and we understand the scheduling challenges,” she added.
