Gay says his “NBA days are over,” prompting him to retire.
He was waived by the Golden State Warriors just before the 2024-25 season started.
Furthermore, the 38-year-old veteran knew he was done.
This came despite signing a contract with the Warriors last summer after the team waived him.
“My NBA days are over. I needed to humble myself and be like: ‘ Look, this is over,” Gay wrote for “The Players Tribune” on Tuesday.
“In the meantime, I’m just feeling extremely grateful for all the love, wisdom, and friendship that I’ve experienced in the game of basketball,” he added.
NO REGRETS DESPITE ‘COMPLICATED’ CAREER FOR NEW YORK NATIVE
Moreover, there were no regrets for the New York native despite having a “complicated” NBA career.
Furthermore, Gay made his mark with the Memphis Grizzlies as the No.8 pick in the 2006 NBA Draft.
He was drafted by the Houston Rockets before he was traded to the Grizzlies, where he became a member of the All-Rookie team that season.
“My story, it’s not some fairy tale,” Gay wrote.
“In the end, I guess I would say it was … complicated,” he added.
‘LOT OF WORK AHEAD’ FOR FORMER UCONN STAR IN RETIREMENT
Furthermore, the former UConn star sees a “lot of work ahead” for him in retirement.
However, Gay didn’t disclose specific plans in his post-NBA career.
Moreover, the veteran forward made his mark with the Grizzlies, where he still ranks fifth in points, fourth in minutes played, and fourth in games played.
Gay also played for the Sacramento Kings, Toronto Raptors, San Antonio Spurs, and the Utah Jazz.
He last played for the Jazz in the 2022-23 season.
Gay went on to average 15.8 points and 5.6 rebounds in 1,120 career games (778 starts).
He was also a member of the Team USA squad that won gold medals in the FIBA World Cup in 2010 and 2014.
