Hansi Flick sacked by Germany as the first in 123 years to be axed
Hansi Flick was sacked by Germany as the Euro 2024 host could not bear another embarrassment after Japan’s 4-1 friendly defeat in Wolfsburg.
The former Bayern Munich manager, who won the famous sextuple in 2021, is now the first in 123 years to be axed by the Germany national team.

Hansi Flick sacked
Saturday’s 4-1 defeat by Japan (The 2022 World Cup nightmare just came back to life, yet again) proved too expensive for Flick.
He becomes the first coach in the 123-year history of the German national team to be sacked, which means this is the first time anyone has ever been since the role was created in 1926.
His assistants, Marcus Sorg and Danny Rohl, have also been dismissed.
German FA president Bernd Neuendorf said:
“The committee agreed that the German national team needs a fresh impetus after the recent disappointing results.
“Going into the European Championship next summer, we need confidence and optimism in the country regarding our team.
“This has been one of the most difficult decisions I have had to make during my time in this role because I really respect Hansi Flick and his assistants, both on a professional and personal level.
“Sporting success is of the upmost importance to the DFB, which is why this decision had to be made.”
The poor run of results that led to Flick to be axed
Since Flick took over Germany in August 2021, the 2014 World Cup winner won only 12 in 25 matches, while they have lost four of the past five games.
There was brightness during the beginning of Flick at the hot seat with eight successive wins, but their form progressively got worse, and Germany exited last year’s World Cup at the group stage.
Oman, Costa Rica, and Peru are the only teams Germany has beaten in the past 12 months.
Flick’s performance in Germany was a shock, considering the manager won 70 of his 86 games in charge of Bayern Munich from November 2019 to June 2021.
Under Flick, Bayern won a treble of the domestic league and cup and Champions League titles in the 2019-20 season before completing the historic haul of six titles in the same year.
Possible replacements for Flick
DFB is now considering the next man in charge to replace Flick. Numerous talks have been about candidates like Julian Nagelsmann, Zinedine Zidane, Louis van Gaal,…
Nagelsmann is still under contract at FC Bayern until 2026, while Zidane has been unemployed since he left Real Madrid years ago.
Meanwhile, Rudi Voller, who managed the team from 2000 to 2004, takes temporary charge for Tuesday’s friendly with France.
The 63-year-old legend will be joined by Hannes Wolf and Sandro Wagner, who will be Voller’s assistants.
