Hasaranga resigns as Sri Lanka T20I captain after just six months

Wanindu Hasaranga has resigned as the Twenty20 international (T20I) captain of Sri Lanka after just six months into the position.

Furthermore, Hasaranga resigned as Sri Lanka’s T20I captain after just six months in his new role.

Moreover, the 26-year-old all-rounder described his decision as something he did in the best interest of Sri Lankan cricket.

“Sri Lanka will always have my utmost best efforts as a player, and I will support and stand by my team always,” Hasaranga told ESPNcricinfo.

The former captain’s resignation’s captain came on the heels of Sri Lanka’s poor showing in the T20 World Cup 2024.

In that tournament, Sri Lanka did not advance to the Super Eight.

Hasaranga is coming off a foot injury and was prioritizing his appearances for Sri Lanka.

On the other hand, he was last reported to have signed up for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Moreover, Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign was described by Hasaranga as “extremely disappointing.”

He cited the Sri Lanka-Bangladesh match as something they should have won.

Furthermore, Bangladesh won by two wickets with six balls remaining.

“Sri Lanlka’s early exit at the T20 World Cup is extremely disappointing to me as the captain and for the entire team,” Hasaranga said.

“I do not wish to place excuses to condone our below-par performance, but also wholeheartedly believe that the Bangladesh game was very close and we should have been able to pull through,” he added.

Hasaranga was recently suspended for two matches after he abused an umpire in between the series against Zimbabwe and Afghanistan.

ASALANKA FLOATED AS POSSIBLE REPLACEMENT FOR HASARANGA FOR CAPTAINCY ROLE

Furthermore, Charith Asalanka’s name is being floated as a possible replacement for Hasaranga for Sri Lanka’s captaincy role.

Moreover, Asalanka took over in the two matches when Hasaranga was suspended.

He is also currently playing for the Jaffna Kings in the Lanka Premier League. (LPL)

On the other hand, Sri Lanka won six of its 10 T20Is it played under Hasaranga.

This includes Sri Lanka’s victories over Zimbabwe and Afghanistan to start the 2024 season.

Hasaranga remains as captain of the Kandy Falcons in the LPL.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka will need to adjust fast as it prepares for its next T20I assignment in a three-match series against India later this month.
