IYER A WORTHY LAST-MINUTE ADDITION AS VIRAT KOHLI INJURED
Iyer was a worthy last-minute addition for India, which was looking for a replacement for the injured Virat Kohli.
Furthermore, Kohli was sidelined with a right knee injury on Wednesday, prompting India to look for a replacement.
Moreover, Iyer delivered when India went with a 59 for two chasing 249 before he up an impressive counter-attack of hitting two sixes and nine fours.
This enabled him to make 59 off 36 balls that took the fight out of England.
“I wasn’t supposed to play the first game, Virat unfortunately got injured and then I got the opportunity,” Iyer recalled.
FROM ‘EXTENDED MOVIE NIGHT’ TO EARLY SLEEP AND GET READY FOR TEST
Iyer noted he was supposed to “extend” his night by watching a movie but his plans suddenly changed.
Moreover, he got a call to join his India teammates in time for the first ODI (One Day International) three-match Test series against England.
Furthermore, Iyer credited his stint in India’s domestic league to stay fit to heed a last-minute call to play.
“To be honest, I played throughout the domestic season, it taught me a lot and gave me a decent idea about how to approach my innings,” Iyer said.
“Also, from the skills point of view, you need to upgrade yourself, elevate and keep learning every now and then,” he added.
GILL, PATEL SHARE SPOTLIGHT IN INDIA’S WIN
Shubmal Gill and Axar Patel shared the spotlight with Iyer in India’s victory.
Furthermore, Gill stepped up with an 87, while Patel had an impressive 52 in stands of 94, nd 108, respectively.
Moreover, Harshit Rana (3/53 from 7 overs) and Ravindra Jadeja (3/26 from 9) shared six wickets between them to dismantle England for a below-par 248.
England failed to recover despite fifties from team captain Jos Buttler (52) and Jack Bethell (51).
“Disappointed not to win the game. Thought we got off to a fantastic start in the powerplay,” Buttler said.
“The openers got off to a great start but to lose four wickets was frustrating,” he added.
