Olympiacos beat Fiorentina as Jose Mendilibar set history
The Spanish manager joined the significant list of those who won major European competitions in consecutive seasons with different teams.
Rafe Benitez was the first ever when he won the UEFA Cup 03/04 with Valencia and the Champions League 04/05 with Liverpool, while Luis Mendilibar repeated the achievements with the Europa League 22/23 with Sevilla and now the Conference League 23/24 with Olympiacos.
Olympiacos are the first Greek side to lift a major European club trophy as Korai Square in Piraeus—the city Olympiacos hail from— celebrated massively when Ayoub El Kaabi scored the Europa Conference League-winning goal.
Another heartbreak for Fiorentina
Football is great but cruel at the same time. While Olympiacos entered the hall of fame for the first time in their history, Serie A side Fiorentina suffered from yet another European Cup final.
- Last year: Fiorentina lost the Europa Conference League final after conceding to West Ham in the 90th minute
- This year, Fiorentina lose the Europa Conference League final after conceding to Olympiacos in the 116th minute
La Viola also became the first team to lose European major finals in consecutive seasons since Benfica in 2013 and 2014 (both in the Europa League).
The defeat also means that Serie A will only have eight reps in Europe next season.
If Fiorentina had won the Conference League final, there would have been 9 Italian teams.
