Mbappe deems his EURO 2024 a “failure”

The France captain dished the ball to Randal Kolo Muani to give France an early lead.

However, Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo canceled Kolo Muani’s effort, as Spain advances to the final in Berlin on Sunday.

The Real Madrid forward ended the tournament with just one goal — a penalty against Poland in the group phase.

“My competition? It was difficult,” Mbappé said. “It was a failure. We had the ambition to be European champions; I had the ambition to be European champion. We aren’t that, so it’s a failure.”

“It’s football. We have to move on. It’s been a long year. I’m going to go on holiday and get some rest — that’ll do me a lot of good, and I’ll try and come back strongly.”

Ditched the mask

Mbappe, 26, was hampered by his injury throughout the EUROs after breaking his nose in France’s opening game against Austria.

That forced him to wear a mask throughout the tournament, although he removed it against Spain.

“We made the choice before the match,” Mbappe said.

“I was fed up with the mask. I asked the doctor if I could play without it, and he told me to do what I want.”

Still, Mbappe does not want to blame his injuries behind his struggles.

“We have to move on,” he said.

“It’s been a long year, I’m going to go on vacation to rest, it’s going to do me a lot of good. We mustn’t complicate football too much.
