Now, Barca sit on 48 points after 23 games—just one point behind Atletico and two behind Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, a heated derby between Real and Atletico in Madrid ended in a 1-1 draw, and Barcelona capitalized on that result to boost their title challenge.

FA Cup Shock: Liverpool Knocked Out by Underdogs

Liverpool pulled off a major upset in the FA Cup fourth round when Championship side Plymouth Argyle knocked them out. Plymouth have become the dark horses of the FA Cup this season. They already stunned Premier League side Brentford with a 1-0 win in the third round, but their recent victory over Liverpool might be even more historic.

Even though Liverpool fielded a mostly bench team, star players like Federico Chiesa, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota couldn’t change the outcome. The substitutes struggled to work together—Liverpool held 75% of the possession but only managed four shots on target, with an expected goal (xG) of just 0.44 from open play, their worst performance under manager Arne Slot.

Early in the second half, Harvey Elliott mishandled the ball in the box, earning a penalty. Striker Ryan Hardie calmly slotted the spot-kick low to the left, outsmarting goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher. Hardie nearly scored a second shortly after, but Kelleher pulled off a fantastic toe save. That penalty was enough to give Plymouth their first FA Cup win over Liverpool since 1956—a 69-year gap!

Aston Villa’s FA Cup Debut: Rashford and Asensio in Action

Aston Villa welcomed new signing Marcus Rashford into the FA Cup action as they beat Tottenham 2-1 at Villa Park. Villa brought Marcus Rashford (coming on for Donyell Malen) and Marco Asensio (in for Leon Bailey) in the second half. However, the two newcomers didn’t leave a big impression in their nearly 30 minutes on the pitch—Rashford lost the ball six times and barely made an impact, while Asensio, despite making perfect passes, didn’t take any shots.

Even so, Aston Villa dominated the game. They opened the scoring at just 57 seconds when Morgan Rogers threaded a pass to Jacob Ramsey on the left, and Ramsey fired a shot that Tottenham’s keeper Antonin Kinsky couldn’t save. Villa doubled their lead in the 64th minute when Pedro Porro intercepted a play, allowing Morgan Rogers to finish with a powerful strike from close range. Tottenham managed to pull one back in stoppage time through 19-year-old Mathys Tel, but it wasn’t enough. Aston Villa’s 2-1 win sends them into the FA Cup fifth round for the first time in 10 years.
