LeBron James could still play at a high level even after 40

The Los Angeles Lakers superstar forward celebrated his 40th birthday on Monday.

When asked how he’ll know when it’s finally time to retire, James said he could still play at a high level for “five to seven years,” but the lack of competitiveness would not be the reason.

“To be honest, if I really wanted to, I could probably play this game at a high level for about another – weird that I might say this – but about another five or seven years, if I wanted to,” James said.

“But I’m not going to do that.”

Retire as a Laker

James, in his record-tying 22nd NBA campaign alongside Vince Carter, is averaging 23.5 points, 9.0 assists and 7.9 rebounds this season.

He won his third Olympic gold medal with Team USA that featured NBA stars in Paris this year.

After starting in the NBA as an 18-year-old rookie, he now plays alongside his 20-year-old son, Bronny James Jr., as his Lakers teammate.

James reiterated that he wants to retire wearing a Lakers uniform.

“It’s kind of laughable, really, to know where I am, to see where I am still playing the game at a high level, still being such a young man but old in the scheme of how many years I got in this profession,” James said.

“I came here to play my last stage of my career and finish it off here, but I’m also not silly or too jaded to know the business of the game as well, to know the business of basketball.”

“But my relationship with this organization speaks for itself and, hopefully, I don’t have to go nowhere before my career is over.”
