Tata Martino started former Barcelona duo Messi and Sergio Busquets in a dominant victory in the Leagues Cup.
Lionel Messi scored a double for Inter Miami
After an explosive debut, having scored an outstanding late winner free-kick, Messi follows up with another five-star performance against Atlanta.
The former Barca and Paris Saint-Germain star scored twice and had an assist in his first start, bringing his total to three goals in two games for Miami.
By half-time, Beckham’s side had already grabbed a 3-0 lead, which was the club’s first time in their history before Messi came along.
Miami went on to win 4-0. Messi exited in the 78th minute to a standing ovation, with many in the crowd wearing his No. 10 jersey.
Inter Miami 4-0 Atlanta Highlights
Messi’s double came in the first half, and it was a comfortable one for the 2022 World Cup winner, who entered the Tuesday night match wearing the club’s armband.
In the eighth minute, Messi took a pass from his longtime Barcelona teammate Sergio Busquets, surged forward, and struck off the right post before tapping in his own rebound. Then, in the 22nd minute, Messi put Miami ahead 2-0 off a pass from Robert Taylor.
With Messi rightly commanding much of the attention from Atlanta’s defenders, opportunities opened for other Miami players. Taylor scored in the 44th minute, then made it 4-0 in the 53rd after being set up by Messi.
It may be too early to see Messi carry Miami over their poor position in the league. However, if the Argentinian can repeat such performances, it is not Mission Impossible to dream of.
