What happened?
Neither the club nor Messi himself want to sign the deal for another year of staying.
PSG have just announced that they will punish Messi with two weeks suspension for his trip to Saudi Arabia without getting the club’s permission.
The 35-year-old will not be able to attend even training with the teams, and of course, no football for the next 14 days for the 2022 World Cup champion.
But it is assumed that the former Barcelona star could not care less about the suspension.
It is understood that Jorge Messi – his father and also agent – is looking at options as Jorge had informed Paris St-Germain’s football advisor Luis Campos a few weeks ago about the imminent departure.
Messi created a massive transfer bomb when he signed a two-year deal in Paris in 2021, with option to renew until 2024, which, will be useless now.
Last month, PSG’ number 30 received boos and harsh comments from the club’s fans ahead of a league game, which annoyed the striker and somehow, set the whole thing heated up.
His reluctance to commit to a new deal in recent months has frustrated PSG’s Qatari owners, and it could not be any clearer that he is insisting on departuring.
Messi’s next destination
There are at least three clubs would love to have Messi in the squads: Inter Miami, Barca and Al-Hilal.
La Liga current leaders and the most likely this season champions Barca are keen on securing a dream return for the forward.
However, Blaugrana has been caught with severe financial difficulties, which had the Catalan’s side all-time top scorer with 672 goals in 778 games leave at first place.
David Beckham’s MLS powerhouse have never been shy from showing interest in Messi, while Saudi Arabia’s side Al-Hilal are willing to pull a record deal exceeding £354m to sign Messi.
Messi believes that he can stay at top level of European football for at least another season before thinking about a more comfortable league.
Messi has scored 31 goals and contributed 34 assists in 71 games in all competitions for PSG, and won the Ligue 1 title last season.
He is favourite to win an eighth Ballon d’Or in October, which is three more than any other player, after winning the World Cup with Argentina in December.
