LOZANO QUITS AS MEXICO COACH AFTER EL TRI STRUGGLES IN COPA AMERICA 2024

Furthermore, Lozano quits as Mexico coach after El Tri struggled in the Copa America 2024 group stage.

The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) announced on Tuesday the team and Lozano were parting ways.

Lozano declined an offer to stay on as staff for a new head coach, the FMF said, in a move of demotion for the 45-year-old.

“Jaime Lozano was offered, along with his coaching staff, a contract until 2030,” the FMF said.

Moreover, the federation added that a new “more experienced head coach” will be accompanied “towards our World Cup.”

“Later it would be Jaime himself who would retake the reins as head coach in the 2026-2030 process,” the FMF said.

MEXICO ‘PROJECT CONTINUES’ UNDER LOZANO BEFORE COACH WAS EVALUATED, SAYS OFFICIAL

On the other hand, Mexico’s “project continues” under Lozano before the coach was evaluated after the Copa, said Mexico sporting director Duilio Davino.

However, there was a lack of unanimous support for Lozano within the FMF, which led to his demotion as an assistant.

Moreover, Lozano was initially named as interim coach last June before he steered Mexico to win the 2023 Gold Cup title.

That elevated him to a permanent head coaching position in August.

Interestingly, Lozano barely helped Mexico to qualify for the Copa through penalties in the 2023-24 Concacaf Nations League quarterfinals.

At the Copa, Mexico could only place third in Group B under Lozano

Moreover, Mexico failed to qualify for the knockouts for the third time in their last four appearances.
