LUNA OPEN TO PLAY FOR MEXICO AFTER REFUSING US TEAM ALTERNATE ROLE

Furthermore, Luna is open to play for Mexico after he refused an offer to be an alternate role on the US men’s national team (USMNT) roster.

The 20-year-old Real Salt Lake midfielder clarified that he never ruled out playing for the home country of his parents.

“I’ve never closed out any doors. For me, it’s continuing to perform and who’s going to give me the best opportunity,” Luna told ESPN on Tuesday.

“I know there’s some changes going on at the Mexican Football Federation (FMF). US Soccer, too, but there are some big changes going on so we’ll see what happens there,” he added.

Moreover, the California-born Luna started his Major League Soccer (MLS) career when he signed a USD250,000 deal in June 2022.

He transferred to Real Salt Lake from El Paso Locomotive in the USL Championship in April 2021.

DIEGO REJECTED US TEAM ALTERNATE ROLE TO STAY WITH REAL SALT LAKE

Moreover, Luna rejected the US team alternate role for him to stay with Real Salt Lake in the MLS.

“There’a s lot of things that go into deciding to turn down being an Olympic backup,” Luna said.

“Some people from one side say and from another side another but no one is behind the human and mental aspect,” he added.

On the other hand, it was USMNT head coach Marko Mitrovic wo hoped to name Luna as an alternate to his 18-man roster to the Paris Olympics.

“For me, there are a lot of things behind the scenes that affected my decision, but basically it was being away for six or seven games that could change my career,” Luna said.

“It was a decision I had to commit to and I did,” he added.

CHANCE TO PLAY FOR AGUIRRE LOOMS FOR LUNA ON MEXICO TEAM

Furthermore, a chance to play for Javier Aguirre looms for Luna on the Mexico team if he gets to transfer from the USMNT.

The FMF named Aguirre as official Mexico head coach on Monday, with former captain Rafael Marquez named as his assistant.

For Luna, he’s ready to move on from the USMNT Olympic snub as he takes pride in being an MLS All-Star.

“For me, I;ve done well and learned to manage tough times. I just put my head down, work, and continue to play well,” the midfielder said.

“Things happen in special ways, no USMNY Olympic call-up but I’m at MLS All-Star,” he added.

Moreover, Luna joins Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba in the MLS All-Star roster that will travel to Columbus, Ohio.

They will try to lead the MLS All-Stars in their matchup there against the best of Liga MX.
