2023 UEFA Super Cup – Man City vs Sevilla Highlights
Manchester City take on Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday evening in Athens, as the UEFA Champions League winner battles out the Europa League champions for the first elite title of the new season.
City are competing to lift the Super Cup for the first time in their history after finally getting their hands on the Champions League trophy in June with a 1-0 win over Inter in Istanbul.
Sevilla qualified for the match in Greece by repeating their party trick and winning the Europa League by overcoming Jose Mourinho’s Roma. However, the Europa League experts could have had better memories as they were only victorious once, their first back in 2006.
And the La Liga side’s seventh visit to the final proved to be the same outcome this time, despite facing English giants without Kevin de Bruyne, Ruben Dias, John Stones, and Bernardo Silva, for separate reasons.
A tight 1-1 draw after regular time
Youssef En-Nesyri’s towering header gave Sevilla the lead in the 25th minute of a match played in stifling heat and humidity in Athens.
The La Liga side fought hard and strong and looked good for it until the Palmer equalizer.
City’s winger Cole Palmer headed home in the 63rd as the European champions dominated the second half, with star striker Erling Haaland staying on the field for the whole game.
After a 1-1 draw in regulation time and nine successful spot kicks in the shoot-out.
Penalties shoot-out
Haaland, Julian Alvarez, Mateo Kovacic, Jack Grealish and Walker converted City’s penalties, while Lucas Ocampos, Rafa Mir, Ivan Rakitic, and Gonzalo Montiel netted for Sevilla.
Nemanja Gudelj struck his attempt against the crossbar to hand City victory inside Stadio Georgios Karaiskakis.
City’s astonishing numbers after clinching the fourth major title in 2023
The 15th trophy won by City in Guardiola’s reign started in 2016 and made up for the loss to Arsenal in a penalty shoot-out in the Community Shield 10 days ago.
Guardiola became the second manager, after Carlo Ancelotti, to win the Super Cup four times and the first to win it with three different teams after doing so at Bayern Munich (2013) and Barcelona (2009, 2011).
The Spanish tactician is averaging a trophy every 27 games at Man City.
Erling Haaland featured in all five finals of Man City and scored zero goals, but the Norwegian striker has won four of those and was an essential figure on the field.
Kyle Walker lifted the cup amid ticker tape and chants of “Champions” by his City teammates on the stage in the middle of the field. It is becoming a familiar sight, with the club having won the Premier League-FA Cup-Champions League treble for the first time last season.
