United fires Ten Hag

Ten Hag, who signed a contract extension in the summer, had just four wins in 13 games played to start the season.

The club announced his sacking on Monday.

ESPN reported that United’s bosses had already lost faith in Ten Hag’s ability to turn things around after a poor start to the campaign.

“Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager,”it said in a statement.

“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.”

Ten Hag took charge of the Premier League giant in April 2022.

The Dutchman won two trophies during his time at Old Trafford — the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.

However, the two last seasons proved to be turbulent for the 54-year-old.

United finished eighth last term, which already heaped pressure on the manager.

Ten Hag out, Van Nistelrooy in as interim

Meanwhile, United announced that Van Nistelrooy will take over on an interim basis.

The 48-year-old will be in charge for the Carabao Cup fixture against Leicester City at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

United said in a statement: “Rudy van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.”

Van Nistelrooy previously played for United between 2002 and 2006.

The Dutchman has a year of managerial experience with PSV Eindhoven.

He left the role in 2023 after leading PSV to victory in the Dutch Cup.
