MARTIN SACKED AFTER SAINTS’ TERRIBLE LOSS TO TOTTENHAM

Martin was sacked after the Saints absorbed a terrible setback at the hands of Tottenham over the weekend.

Furthermore, the Saints’ lopsided loss was critical for the 38-year-old coach, who leaves with Southampton nursing its 13th loss in 16 matches.

Moreover, Southampton is at the bottom of the table and is nine points from safety after having taken five points from 16 matches.

On the other hand, the club described Martin’s dismissal as a “difficult decision”

“We can confirm that we have taken the difficult decision to part ways with our men’s first team manager Russell Martin,” the club said.

“However, the reality of our situation is clear. The board have supported Russell and his staff and been open and transparent regarding our expectations,” it added.

‘BOOS HURT’ AS MANAGER, SAYS MARTIN, AS PRESSURE MOUNTED AFTER LOSS TO SPURS

Moreover, the “boos hurt” as a manager, says Martin, as pressure mounted on him after the loss to the Spurs.

Furthermore, the former coach’s refusal to bend from his style has made the Saints predictable for opponents to beat them.

Martin was still diplomatic to the fans when asked about the boos he heard during Sunday’s match,

“(The fans) were amazing in the second half. Really good. As a person, (the boos don’t hurt). I understand that it’s not personal,” Martin said.

“But as a manager, yes. It hurts me as well as the team. But I also understand it,” he added.

SAINTS COULD EYE ROHL AS NEXT MANAGER, SAYS REPORT; RUSK ASSUMES INTERIM ROLE

Furthermore, the Saints could eye Danny Rohl as its manager, talkSport reported, to replace Martin.

Moreover, Simon Rusk will assume the interim role for the senior side as he is the current Under-21s manager.

Rusk is expected to make his debut stint as Southampton’s senior club manager in a Carabao Cup quarter-final at home to Premier League leaders Liverpool on Wednesday.

Rohl worked as an assistant to Ralph Hassenhuttl at St Mary and is reported to have backers at Southampton.

The German coach has managed to lead Sheffield to a promotion hunt this season as they are ninth in the table.
