Despite having three goals disallowed for offside, Real Madrid secured a convincing 4-1 victory over Las Palmas in La Liga’s Round 20, propelling them to the top.

A Tough Start at the Bernabéu for Real Madrid

Las Palmas, who had held Real Madrid to a 1-1 draw earlier in the season, looked to shock the Bernabéu early. Just 28 seconds into the match, former Barcelona player Sandro Ramirez delivered a cross from the right, allowing Fabio Silva to score past Thibaut Courtois. This marked Real Madrid’s earliest conceded goal since Michu scored against them in the 15th second during a match against Rayo Vallecano in September 2011.

Mbappe Sparks Real’s Comeback

The early setback only fired up Carlo Ancelotti’s side. In the 17th minute, Sandro Ramirez fouled Rodrygo inside the box, leading to a penalty. Kylian Mbappé calmly converted the spot-kick, sending Jasper Cillessen the wrong way to equalize.

Real continued to dominate, and in the 33rd minute, a long-range effort from Mbappé forced Cillessen into a save, only for Lucas Vázquez to pounce on the rebound. Vázquez squared the ball to Brahim Diaz, who slid in to finish into an empty net, making it 2-1.

A minute later, Rodrygo set up Mbappé on the left, and the Frenchman blasted a first-time shot into the top corner for his second goal, extending the lead to 3-1. However, his potential hat-trick was denied in the 42nd minute when VAR ruled him offside in the build-up.

Las Palmas’ Struggles Intensify

Las Palmas’ woes deepened when substitute Benito Ramirez was sent off for a reckless challenge on Vázquez. Initially shown a yellow card, the referee upgraded it to a straight red after consulting VAR.

Real Madrid kept pushing, and later in the game, Jude Bellingham and Federico Valverde found the back of the net. Unfortunately, VAR again intervened, disallowing both goals for offside.

La Liga Standings Shift

With Barcelona held to a 1-1 draw by Getafe and Atletico Madrid suffering a 1-0 defeat to Leganes, Real Madrid’s victory took them to 46 points, two clear of Atletico and seven ahead of Barcelona.

Champions League Challenge Ahead

Real Madrid now turn their attention to the Champions League, where they host RB Leipzig on January 22. Currently sitting in 20th place with nine points, Real Madrid faces a crucial battle to secure a playoff spot for the Round of 16.

Mbappé’s brilliance continues to elevate Real Madrid, and with La Liga’s top spot in their grasp, the team’s confidence is riding high as they approach a decisive stretch of the season.
