Messi Ronaldo out of Ballon d’Or contention
This marks the first time since 2003 that neither Messi nor Ronaldo has been nominated for the award.
France Football recently unveiled the shortlists for the awards on Wednesday, with the winners set to be announced at a ceremony in Paris on October 28.
Messi, a record eight-time winner, clinched the Ballon d’Or last year.
The 37-year-old first won the award in 2009, kicking off a four-year streak of securing the top individual prize.
His first nomination came in 2006.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo is five-time Golden Ball winner.
At their respective prime of their careers, Ronaldo and Messi dominated the Ballon d’Or, winning it a combined 13 times from 2008 onward.
Who are the nominees?
Meanwhile, Vinicius Junior, Rodri, Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland, and Harry Kane are among the names nominated.
Both Vinicus and Bellingham led Real Madrid win LaLiga and the club’s 16th Champions League title last season.
Meanwhile, Haaland led the Premier League in goals while also helping Manchester City secure their fourth straight league title.
On the other hand, Kane also led Bundesliga in scoring on his debut season with Bayern Munich.
Rodri, the UEFA EURO 2024 Player of the Tournament, led Spain to a championship in this year’s European Championship.
Earlier this summer, Kylian Mbappe joined Real Madrid after spending six seasons with Paris Saint-Germain.
