Thompson joins the Mavericks
Per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Thompson, 34, agreed on a three-year, $50 million contract with the Mavs.
The deal required a multi-team sign-and-trade that sends Mavericks swingman Josh Green to the Charlotte Hornets and two second-round picks to the Warriors.
The five-time All-Star sharpshooter averaged 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists per game while shooting 43.2% overall and 38.7% on deep.
Thompson will join the Mavericks team that recently reached the NBA Finals, led by the superstar backcourt tandem of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.
Sources reported that Thompson also considered a move to the Los Angeles Lakers.
However, the cheaper cost of living in Texas compared to California, as well as the Mavs’ recent Finals run, were significant factors in his decision.
End of a dynasty
Thompson officially ended his 13-year run with the Warriors.
Still, Thompson helped the franchise build a dynasty alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.
The Warriors had six finals appearance and won titles in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022.
However, Thompson struggled to regain his old form on both ends after missing two straight seasons due to knee and Achilles injuries.
In his final season, Thompson’s relationship with the franchise became increasingly strained over contract discussions.
His role with the team also diminished later in the season.
Nonetheless, the Warriors sent their well-wishes to Thompson and promised to retire his #11 jersey.
“Klay’s legacy will live on forever and we look forward to the day we can retire his #11 jersey at Chase Center where he will join a host of Warriors immortals, including those who helped shape this recent dynasty — himself included.
“We thank Klay for his contributions and wish him the best as another chapter in his journey is written.”
