“No bad intentions” from Fernandez

To recall, Fernandez and some of his Argentina teammates chanted a derogatory song mocking the heritage of French national team in an Instagram Live video.

This discriminatory behavior occurred after Argentina defeated Colombia in the Copa America final.

Chelsea has already called out the 23-year-old’s unacceptable behavior.

Maresca, who is with Chelsea in the United States preparing for their friendlies, spoke about the Fernandez issue.

“I don’t think there are any bad intentions behind [it] so starting from that point, for me it is quite easy. The player already did a statement apologizing.”

“The club did the same so there are not many things to add but the only thing I can say from my point of view that I can add that they are all young with good intentions. Good guy, good person, good human being. There was not any bad intention.”

What about the team chemistry?

Wesley Fofana, Fernandez’s Chelsea teammate, reposted the video on X, saying: “Football in 2024: uninhibited racism.”

Some of Fernandez’s teammates have unfollowed him on Instagram.

Fernandez has since apologized after the incident.

When asked if the recent fallout of Fernandez’s actions could affect the team chemistry, Maresca believes that the situation is settled for now.

“I don’t think so to be honest. Probably it is the immediate reaction.

“But all in all, I don’t think so. I spoke with Enzo but as I said, I spoke with all of them. The situation is quite clear. He did already a statement apologising, the club did the same so.”
