The trusted sports journalist who used to work for BBC and now the Athletic revealed that the Spanish manager Guardiola already made his decision to continue coaching Man City, despite rumors that he’s leaving at the end of 2024/25 season.
Orsntein also revealed that the FA reached out to Pep during the Summer with a potential offer to replace Gareth Southgate. However, Pep turned down the invitation to manage Three Lions, and the FA picked Thomas Tuchel, who will be responsible for a World Cup ticket in 2026 in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
Meanwhile, the departure of the reigning Premier League champions’ football director, Aitor “Txiki” Begiristain Mujika, did affect Pep in some way, but Orsntein ensured that the former Barcelona manager would stay at Etihad for at least another season.
With sporting director and close friend, Txiki Begiristain is set to leave this summer, and Guardiola admits that part of him will go too when Txiki leaves. However, according to Orsntein, ‘part of Pep is staying’.
Tixki to leave Man City at the end of the season but Pep would not follow
There’s been talk that Guardiola, the mastermind behind City’s multiple Premier League titles, might want to follow Begiristain out the door, especially since his contract is up at the end of the season.
When asked about renewing his deal, he was honest: “I want to be really, really, really convinced that it’s the best for the club.”
“I will not delay every action knowing I am creating a problem for the club. If I feel there’s a problem, I’ll take a decision as quick as possible.”
“But I don’t have that feeling because they understand the reasons. “A part of me is leaving. Txiki is a friend of mine — the architect who helped to create one of the best teams ever from Barcelona and now here.”
“I’ve known his decision — for family and personal reasons — for a long time and he will be missed.”
“I’m pretty sure that the club have an option when Txiki should leave and they have options when Pep will leave.”
“Sooner or later it’s going to happen and they are prepared. So it’s not going to be a surprise.”
