PRANNOY ADVANCES, BEATS YANG AFTER 18-HOUR ‘LONG WAIT’
Prannoy advances after he beat Brian Yang, 21-12, 17-21, 21-15, following an 18-hour “long wait” for his match to begin.
Furthermore, the Indian shuttler overcame a letdown in the middle set to outsteady Yang in the decider of their first-round match.
Moreover, Prannoy had to wait nearly 18 hours due to a rain delay caused by roof leakage at the playing arena.
He led, 21-12, 6-3, when play was first halted on Tuesday.
“It was long day waiting and thinking about what would happen. To finally be on the winning side in the first round feels good,” Prannoy said.
“But as players, there wasn’t much we could do about it (long delays),” he added.
CHINESE MEN’S DOUBLES DEFENDING CHAMPS OUT
Moreover, China’s men’s doubles pair Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang were eliminated in their second-round match.
Furthermore, the defending champions absorbed a 17-21, 16-21 loss to Seo Seung Jae and Kim Won Ho of South Korea.
This marks the first since the World Tour’s inception in 2018 that the top four seeds fail to advance past the second round.
Top seeds Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen of Denmark were ousted right in the first round.
Home favorites and world No.3 Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, as well as Indonesia’s No.4 Fajar Alfian and Rian Ardianto of Indonesia also fell.
BANSOD REACHES ROUND OF 16; SHETTY-RANKIREDDY ALSO ADVANCE
Other Indian shuttlers also did well, with Malvika Bansod and the men’s doubles pair Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy also progressing to the next round.
Furthermore, Bansod pulled off a 21-15, 21-16 victory over Goh Jin Wei to join Prannoy into the round of 16.
Bansod needed 45 minutes to bring down her Malaysian opponent.
She will next face third seed Han Yue for a place into the quarterfinals.
Chirag and Rankireddy defeated Tang Kai-Wei and Lu Ming-che of Chinese Taipei, 21-10, 16-21, 21-5 in their opening match.
The pair also known as “SatChi” will next take on Malaysia’s Nur Mohd Azryin Ayub and Tan Wee Kiong.
