Koeman speaks on Bergwijn for his Saudi Move

Bergwijn, 27, left Ajax on Monday for Al-Ittihad in a €25 million deal.

He will now link up with stars like Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kante in Saudi.

The move angered Koeman, saying the winger prioritized finances over sporting ambition.

“In Bergwijn’s case is that he goes at the age of 26, sporting ambition does not prevail. Not everyone thinks, fortunately, the same way,” he said.

“I think when you are 26 the main ambition should be sporting and not financial, but those are choices players make.”

“The book is closed”

Aside from disagreeing with Bergwjin’s move to Saudi, Koeman hinted this could mark the end of Bergwijn’s international career.

In addition, the Dutch coach said the forward did not contact him before deciding.

“He could have stayed at Ajax, couldn’t he? And I think they pay OK at Ajax too.”

“The book is basically closed for him, though. He has not contacted me about this. I think he knows how I think about this.”

Bergwijn has 35 appearances for Netherlands, and was part of Koeman’s squad at EURO 2024.
