RUNE STUNS ALCARAZ TO CLAIM FIRST BARCELONA OPEN TITLE

Rune stuns Alcaraz, 7-6(6), 6-2, in Sunday’s final to claim his first Barcelona Open title in Spain.

Furthermore, the 21-year-old Danish world No.9 took advantage of a seemingly injured Alcaraz midway through the match to win his first title in two years.

Moreover, Rune hasn’t won anything since the Bavarian Open in April 2023.

The Dane had to get past No2 seed Caper Ruud in the quarterfinals to earn a shot at Alcaraz, who was seeking his third Barcelona Open trophy.

Alcaraz won the event previously in 2022 and 2023.

HOLGER PUSHES CARLOS BACK TO NO3 IN ATP RANKINGS

Rune thus pushed Alcaraz back to No3 in the latest ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) men’s rankings.

Moreover, the Spaniard moved a notch back after Germany’s Alexander Zverev claimed the Munich Open title early Sunday.

Furthermore, Rune described his latest win in a “great match” that “means the world” to him.

“In the beginning I was a bit stressed because Carlos obviously played big-time tennis and I had to breathe a lot and find my rhythm,” the Dane said.

“I’m very happy with how I stayed composed when it really mattered. I was also very brave when it mattered,” he added.

OSTAPENKO UPSETS SABALENKA TO RULE STUTTGART

Ostapenko upsets Sabalenka, 6-4, 6-1, to win the Porsche Grand Prix final in Stuttgart over the weekend.

Furthermore, the 27-year-old Latvian world No18 broke the Belarussian world No.1 six times, twice in the first set, to set off her dominating performance.

Moreover, the unseeded Ostapenko finally beat Sabalenka for the first time in four head-to-head mstvchups for her first claycourt title since the 2017 French Open.

“I  was ready to play every single player, because the draw here is so small. You have to be ready for the best, and I did that,” the Latvian said.

“I think the game was already very good but I have been working on my mental stuff. I understand what I have to do now. I believe in myself,” she added.
