Messi joined the Ligue 1 giant on a two-year deal in August 2021, following his emotional departure from Barcelona. It was due to financial reasons that the 35-year-old had to leave the club which he had devoted 20 years to contribute.

Inter Miami

MLS side Inter Miami are reportedly in the pole position to sign the World Cup winner as a free agent in the summer, reported L’Equipe and The Times.

Sources from the above newspapers pointed out that the US side, who are part-owned by David Beckham, are ‘confident’ of a deal which will make Messi the highest-paid player in MLS history.

Messi is known to be a fan of Miami as a place. He has holidayed there with his family on several occasions and the lifestyle clearly holds an allure. But is he willing to turn his back on the higher level of European football to move to the US?

Barcelona

Al-Hilal

Al-Nassr made a blockbuster with the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo, and this maybe very well opening a whole new scenario for the Saudi Arabia’s league’s history.

Ever since Ronaldo made the mega move to Riyadh there have been rumours that Messi could follow suit.

Mundo Deportivo reported recently that Al-Nassr’s rivals Al-Hillal would be willing to pay Messi a staggering £245m-a-year – a figure which would dwarf Ronaldo’s £177m per year pay cheque.

Newell’s Old Boys

Messi has never had the chance to play for his hometown club Newell’s Old Boys, the man himself stated that five years ago:

“The desire is always playing for Newell’s – it is what I dreamed of as a kid,” Messi told TyC Sports.

“When I went to the club I imagined playing in the Primera Division, but I do not know what’s going to happen in a few years. I cannot say I’m going back because I do not know where I’m going to be.”

It’s not financially realistic for a club like Newell’s Old Boys, but on the romantic notion, only Messi could make this happen.
