VALENCIA CANCELS JAVI GUERRA DEAL WITH ATLETICO MADRID
Furthermore, Valencia canceled the deal to move Guerra to Atletico Madrid.
This came after Diego Simeone’s side attempted to back out of an agreement for Chelsea’s Gallagher.
Valencia sporting director Miguel Angel Corona disclosed that Atletico attempted to cancel Gallagher’s transfer from Chelsea to facilitate a Guerra deal.
“Atletico de Madrid replied that they were trying to pull out of the Gallagher transaction with Chelsea, and if that didn’t happen they were not going to be able to do the deal for Javi Guerra,” Corona said.
“We weren’t informed about that situation so obviously, for our benefit and to protect Javi, we bowed out,” he added.
Moreover, Atletico eventually pushed through to sign Gallagher from Chelsea.
That deal was worth around £40 million (USD44 million), sources told ESPN.
ATLETICO PURSUING GALLAGHER AND GUERRA AT THE SAME TIME: REPORTS
Moreover, Atletico were pursuing Gallagher and Guerra almost at the same time, reports said.
Atletico and Valencia have initially agreed on a fee of around £25 million (£21.4 million) plus add-ons for the 21-year-old Spanish midfielder.
Incidentally, Valencia agreed to hold a sell-on clause of around 15% for Guerra, The Athletic reported.
However, Valencia imposed a deadline for Atletico on Wednesday to finalize the transfer.
The move eventually fell through.
This was confirmed by sources close to Valencia, Atletico, and Guerra.
“There is a maximum agreement (between clubs) on Sunday,” Corona said.
“Plus it was between the president of Valencia and the maximum shareholder of Atletico Madrid,” he added.
CHELSEA UNAWARE OF ATLETICO TRYING TO CANCEL GALLAGHER DEAL
Furthermore, Chelsea was unaware of Atletico trying to cancel the Gallagher deal, Corona said.
He noted that Valencia wanted out “because it was not a discussion that was discussed on Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday.”
Moreover, the Valencia official noted that “there were constant WhatsApps, emails, calls, comments on clauses” between the two sides.
“We were not informed of anything regarding the link between the two and we got out of it to protect ourselves,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chelsea told Gallagher of their plan to sold him to avoid risking losing him on a free transfer next summer.
