Prolific Scoring Form of Xuan Son for Vietnam in his debut competition

With seven goals in just four matches, Xuân Son now leads by three over Nguyễn Tiến Linh (Vietnam), Suphanat Muenta (Thailand), and Shawal Anuar (Singapore). Anuar is no longer in contention as Singapore was eliminated earlier.

Xuan Son’s record-breaking run has included three braces:

  1. Group Stage: Debut against Myanmar in a 5-0 win.
  2. Semi-finals: Second-leg victory over Singapore (3-1).
  3. Final First Leg: A crucial 2-1 win against Thailand.

Additionally, he scored in the semi-final first-leg win (2-0) over Singapore, where he earned the penalty converted by Tiến Linh.

In the match against Thailand, Xuân Son opened the scoring in the 59th minute with a header from a precise assist by Vũ Văn Thanh. He doubled the lead in the 73rd minute, pouncing on a defensive error by Chalermsak Aukkee and firing a powerful shot into the far corner. Despite missing two one-on-one opportunities later, his contribution was decisive.

On the Verge of the Golden Boot at the ASEAN Cup 2024

With just one match left in the tournament, Xuân Son is the clear favorite for the Golden Boot. If he succeeds, he will become the second Vietnamese player to win the award, following Tiến Linh in 2022.

Record-Breaking Achievements for Xuan Son

  • Xuan Son is the first Vietnamese player to score more than six goals in a single ASEAN Championship.
  • He is also the first to score in four consecutive matches for Vietnam, breaking the previous record of three set by Lê Huỳnh Đức during the 1996 Tiger Cup.

The all-time record for most goals in a single ASEAN Cup stands at 10, held by Singapore’s Noh Alam Shah, who scored seven of those in a match against Laos in 2007.

From Brazil to Vietnam

Born in 1997 and originally named Rafaelson, Xuan Son became a Vietnamese citizen in September 2023. He is the first naturalized player without Vietnamese heritage to join the national team since 2009, following pioneers like Phan Văn Santos and Huỳnh Kesley Alves.
