Yann Sommer turns into Gandalf as Gladbach frustrate misfiring Bayern
Have you ever thought of goalkeepers who turned into Gandalf on any given day, playing the game of their lives as if it was on the line?
Well, that was exactly the same thing that happened to Yann Sommer, with the Borussia Mönchengladbach custodian set a new record for saves in the Bundesliga as The Colts halted defending champions Bayern Munich with a 1-1 draw on the latter’s home turf.
The Switzerland number one was unconscious on goal for the visitors, who even survived a scare after Sadio Mane’s close-ranged strike was crossed out by VAR, and eventually took a 43rd-minute lead courtesy of forward Marcus Thuram.
Leroy Sane duly saved the Bavarian blushes with seven minutes remaining but they could not find a winner, thus dropping points for the first time, after a blistering 15-goal haul in their first three wins of the season gave them the league record for the hottest start to the season.
However, Sommer was the star of matchday four, as he stopped NINETEEN (19) shots which was a new record in the Bundesliga. You can watch the Swiss stopper turn into the Lord of The Rings character as he emphatically told the red shirts: YOU SHALL NOT PASS!
To put into perspective, the previous record was set by then-Hertha goalkeeper just last season, against the same Bavarian foes. However, the Berlin outfit were at the wrong end of a home defeat.
And to rub it in, Gladbach’s Twitter woke up and chose violence, while bringing up one of those sequences.
The result might not change the fact that league-leading Bayern had a two-point lead over now-sixth Gladbach at the table, with both clubs remain unbeaten after their first four matches.
