Euro 2024 Highlights – Austria eliminated Poland after hard-fought win
Euro 2024 Highlights: Austria scored two late goals to make Poland the first team eliminated as Group D’s bottom.
G. Trauner (9′) scored first to give Ralf Rangnick’s side the lead before K. Piątek (30′) levelled. However, two second-half goals from C. Baumgartner (66′) and M. Arnautovic ended Robert Lewandowski’s hope with a 78th-minute penalty.

This result, followed by France’s draw with the Netherlands later on Friday, means Poland will finish bottom of Group D even if they win their final game, which will be a sad outcome for Lewandowski at his probably last Euros dance.
Austria 3-1 Poland
Both sides lost the opening matches, meaning a defeat in Berlin could take either home early.
The atmosphere was wild for the game at the Olympiastadion, which was as important as a ‘final’ for Austria and Poland.
Austria struck first when Gernot Trauner rose at the near post to head home Phillipp Mwene’s cross.
At that point, Poland struggled to get out of their half but quickly improved and began pushing for an equalizer.
It arrived after 30 minutes, when a cross from the right was not properly cleared. Although Jan Bednarek’s shot was blocked, Krzysztof Piatek was first to the rebound and fired low into the net.
Clear chances were at a premium after that, even when Poland’s talismanic striker Robert Lewandowski belatedly emerged off the bench, but as the game entered the final stages, Austria found the inspiration they needed.
Marko Arnautovic’s dummy allowed Christoph Baumgartner time and space to advance to the edge of the area before he coolly slotted past Wojciech Szczesny.
Austria’s victory was sealed a few minutes later. With Poland pouring forward in search of an equalizer, Marcel Sabitzer ran clear. Although Szczesny brought him down, Arnautovic converted the resulting penalty.

End of the road for Poland
Arnautovic’s goal sparked wild celebrations from Austrian fans, who had seen their side narrowly beaten by France in their opening game but now travel to Dortmund on Tuesday to take on the Dutch with renewed hope that they can still progress.
Poland, meanwhile, became the first of the 24 teams participating in Euro 2024 to be eliminated when the Netherlands failed to beat France in Leipzig.
Poland can still finish level on points with Austria, which is currently third, but in that situation, the head-to-head record between the two will come into play.
