Euro Highlights – Turkey 3-1 Georgia
Debutant Georgia showed that they were not in Germany for vacation as they locked horns with powerhouses Turkey.
The two sides exchanged chances in the first half, but Turkey, being superior with more talents in the squad, broke the deadlock in the 25th minute. Guler started the play with a through ball, but the latter’s cross was blocked by the opponent’s clearance.
Right-back Muldur scored an outrageous volley from the rebound into the top corner, leaving Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili no chance despite reaching the furthest he could.
But seven minutes later, Mikautadze scored Georgia’s first goal in a major tournament after expertly guiding Giorgi Kochorashvili’s cross into the near corner.
After the hour mark, Los Blancos forward Guler became the third teenager to score on his Euros debut with a curling strike into the top corner from 25 yards.
Georgia fought well toward the injury time as the Euro debutants looked for a leveller. Their fans could not believe that the chances came and were wasted.
Willy Sagnol’s side came close when Kochorashvili missed a late opportunity, having hit the bar earlier.
In a frantic finale, they struck the post and had Budu Zivzivadze’s goalbound effort blocked by Samet Akaydin’s head in the fifth minute of added time.
But Turkey sealed the success with the last kick of the game as substitute Kerem Akturkoglu broke clear and, with keeper Mamardashvili having come up for a corner, rolled a finish into an empty net.
Turkish fans celebrated wildly after their side, on manager Vincenzo Montella’s 50th birthday, scored a valuable three points.
What’s next for Turkey and Georgia
Turkey will look to make it two wins on the bounce on Saturday when they face Portugal, while Georgia play the Czech Republic.
Guler beats Ronaldo’s mark
It was a special night for an exceptional talent, Arda Guler.
After becoming the first Turkish player to win the Champions League in June when Real Madrid beat Borussia Dortmund, Guler lived up to the hype that followed him into Euro 2024.
Guler’s true style left spectators in awe in the pouring Dortmund rain as he put Turkey ahead with an out-of-this-world strike.
At 19 years and 114 days, he became the youngest player to score on his debut in the competition, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo’s previous record of 19 years and 128 days set against Greece in 2004.
