Euro result: Germany 5-1 Scotland

Julian Nageslman aimed to have the perfect start to the Euro as the host nation. They look to win the European championship for the first time since 1996. And they only needed 20 minutes to bag two goals against the visitors.

There was a sign of a goal only 60 seconds into the first half when Germany’s Florian Wirtz had an early scoring chance after retrieving a pinpoint cross-field pass. Still, Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn came out to deny the shot.

Nine minutes later, Joshua Kimmich picks up a long pass from Toni Kroos and centres for Florian Wirtz, who is all alone as he takes the shot on first from near the edge of the box.

Scotland’s Angus Gunn gets a hand on it but can only push it against the post, and the ball rolls the wrong way from a Scottish perspective. Jamal Musiala scores in 19′ as Germany takes a 2-0 lead over Scotland

After a pair of sharp passes, midfielder Jamal Musiala hammered in Germany’s second goal into the upper part of the net through traffic.

Germany added a third just before the halftime whistle with a Kai Havertz penalty following an incident that saw Scotland’s Ryan Porteous receive a red card. The Watford defender made a poor tackle, and the early bath was totally deserved for such a clumsy decision. The first half ended with three goals for Germany.

It was all the hosts in the first half. They scored twice in the first 20 minutes and knocked through a penalty kick in the closing moments of the half. Scotland had no shots, while Germany out-passed 299-112.

After the hour-mark, Nagelsmann decided to rest his first half’s scorers Havertz and Wirtz to give game time for Leroy Sane and Nicklas Fullkrug. The sub needs only a few minutes to make a massive impact.

With Grant Hanley in a fankle, Dortmund striker Fullkrug benefits from the ball’s break and crashes a beautiful shot into the top corner of the net from 18 yards. The 31-year-old put the ball in the back of the net for the second time, only to be ruled out for offside.

At last, a moment for the Tartan Army to cheer as Scott McKenna nods the ball on from a deep free-kick, and it pings off the head of Antonio Rudiger to whizz past Manuel Neuer.

The celebrations of thousands of Scotland fans did not last long, as another sub, Emre Can, scored late in extra time to finally win the game.

Former Liverpool Emre Can was only called up a few days ago. Now he’s celebrating a finely worked goal as he picks out the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

It was a sore night to forget for Scotland as their 10-man bowed out to an outclassed German side.
