Euro 2024 Result – Switzerland edged Hungary in opening group game
Euro 2024 Result: Switzerland beat Hungary in a dominated first half to give a perfect start in their group A opening game following Germany’s win at Scotland.
It was a lovely day for the Swiss fans at Cologne Stadium, especially during the first 45 minutes when Kwadwo Duah and Michel Aebischer put two to show their total outclassing level.
Hungary pulled one back in the second half, with Barnabas Varga scoring, but Substitute Breel Embolo nailed the game with a last-minute winning goal to clinch his side three valuable points.

With more quality names in his squad, Yakin’s side proved superior with control of the ball at the start. Switzerland took over the game as Hungary created little to nothing in attack during the first half.
A goal was inevitable when London-born Duah slipped in by Aebischer before finishing beyond Gulacsi in the 12th minute. Surprisingly, Duah became the first English-born scorer of Euro 2024 and was far from the national team until May. It is an excellent goal for a great debut.

After breaking the deadlock, Switzerland was even better, while Hungary went all-out on defence.
On the stroke of half-time, left-wing back Aebischer cut in on his right foot to expertly place a strike beyond the diving Gulacsi from 20 yards. For your information, Michel Aebischer is the first Swiss player to have both scored and set up a goal in a European Championship match.
After the break, Hungary suddenly became the better side in the first half of our period.
In the 63rd minute, Varga missed a gilt-edge chance to halve the deficit as he steered his header wide.
But he responded well, meeting Szoboszlai’s curling ball three minutes later with a deft header to halve the deficit and give his side some hope.
Still, the resurgent Hungarians were unable to find an equalizer. And when you can not score, your opponents will.
Having only recently returned to action following a cruciate ligament injury, Monaco striker Embolo was introduced off the bench in the 74th minute.
And the usual suspect did what he did best: score. Embolo pounced on a defensive error to slot home in the third minute of added time and settled the outcome. This was Embolo’s successive goal at Euros as he is the only Swiss player to have found the net in the last three major tournaments (EURO 2020, WC 2022, EURO 2024)
Scotland remain bottom of Group A after Germany’s 5-1 thrashing, while Switzerland sit second behind the tournament hosts.
