Switzerland 1-1 Germany: Füllkrug cancels out Ndoye goal to keep hosts top
Switzerland and Germany shared the points after a hard-fought battle in their Group A fixture in Frankfurt, qualifying for the Round of 16 of UEFA EURO 2024.
Dan Ndoye broke the deadlock before the surprising Niclas Füllkrug equalized for the hosts in the closing minutes.
The game was slow after two corners in the opening three minutes as host Germany controlled the possession. Still, Julian Nagelsman’s side struggled to create chances.
However, Switzerland grabbed their chance and took the stunning lead with Remo Freuler assisting Bologna team-mate Ndoye, who picked the perfect time to score his first senior international goal. Aged 23 years and 242 days, Ndoye has become the second-youngest scorer for the Nati at a EURO, behind Johan Vonlanthen, who was 18y 141d vs France at EURO 2004.
Ndoye once again scared the German fans, his shot going narrowly wide.
Die Mannschaft reacted, going close to equalizing through Antonio Rüdiger’s header just before half-time. Germany began the second half with a fine opportunity: a powerful strike by Jamal Musiala was saved by Yann Sommer, with İlkay Gündoğan unable to make a good connection on the rebound. Next, Toni Kroos tried his luck, also in vain.
Germany kept pushing. Kai Havertz’s header worried Sommer. Then the hosts produced their best moment yet – Joshua Kimmich went for a goal from close range, but Manuel Akanji’s block was phenomenal. Havertz threatened, too, his header grazing the top of the bar.
However, Switzerland’s first competitive win over Germany in 86 years looked increasingly likely – even after a disallowed goal for Ruben Vargas – until Füllkrug did what he does best. From a cross by fellow replacement David Raum, the super sub beat Sommer with a superb header to keep Germany first in the Group.
Germany only won all three group matches in the 2012 EURO.

Scotland 0-1 Hungary: Csoboth snatches stoppage-time victory
Sub Kevin Csoboth’s late strike settled a tense contest at Stuttgart Arena. It lifted Hungary into third-place contention in the first competitive meeting between Scotland and Hungary.
Clear-cut chances were at a premium until Kevin Csoboth came off the bench to clinch Hungary three points as Group A concluded. Hungary must now wait to discover whether they qualify for the Round of 16 as one of the four best third-placed teams as Scotland bows out of EURO 2024.
In what was a must-win game for both Scotland and Hungary, Kevin Csoboth did not score until the very last minute of added time, giving Hungary a chance of qualifying for the Round of 16 as one of the best third-placed teams.
Scotland dominated possession early on, but Hungary looked more dangerous before the opposing goal, though rarely testing Scotland’s keeper Angus Gunn outright. They got their best look-in just before half-time when Willi Orbán’s header glanced off the crossbar after a free-kick from Dominik Szoboszlai.
Hungary remained on the front foot entering the second half. However, Scotland’s sense of urgency also soared noticeably, with Ché Adams curling their first real effort over the bar in 53 minutes. The pace overall increased with quick transitions and chances at both ends. In the 62nd minute, play was interrupted due to a collision between Hungary forward Barnabás Varga and Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn.
The added time proved frantic and end-to-end. Csoboth had Hungary’s best chance thus far with a curling effort against the post. In reply, Scotland caused plenty of problems for the Hungarian defence, only for Csoboth to convert a rapid counter-attack in the tenth minute of stoppage time. It was the latest goal in EURO history.
With just one point, Scotland duly bowed out of EURO 2024 as the fourth-placed team in Group A. Hungary now waits to learn if their EURO journey continues.
