Ukraine kept their EURO 2024 alive hopes after completing a 2-1 comeback to beat Slovakia 2-1 in a their Group E clash on Friday.

Ukraine keeps EURO 2024 hopes alive after beating Slovakia

Slovakia actually took the lead in the opening half, courtesy of a 17th-minute goal from Ivan Schranz.

However, Slovakia was unprepared for Ukraine’s spirited comeback in the second half.

Mykola Shaparenko equalized in the 54th minute with a close-range finish, coming from Oleksandr Zinchenko’s cross.

Substitute Roman Yaremchuk sealed Ukraine’s game-winning goal in the 80th minute, following a lofted pass from Shaparenko.

This marks Ukraine’s first come-from-behind Euro win since their 2-1 victory against Sweden in 2012.

“They showed the spirit of Ukraine”

Ukraine manager Sergiy Rebrov said his players “showed the spirit” of the country from their second-half comeback.

“This is not a different team,” Rebrov said afterwards. “There was different spirit — I am pleased for the players — they showed the spirit of Ukraine and deserved this win. It was important to win for our country, our fighters, our supporters.”

With the win, Ukraine revived their EURO 2024 bid by leveling on points with opponents Slovakia and Romania.

The war-torn nation will next face Belgium on Thursday in their final Group E match.

Meanwhile, Slovakia, who defeated Belgium in a surprising fashion in the opening match, squandered their opportunity to advance to the knockout stage.

Slovakia will have their last Group E match against Romania.
