Slovakia actually took the lead in the opening half, courtesy of a 17th-minute goal from Ivan Schranz.

However, Slovakia was unprepared for Ukraine’s spirited comeback in the second half.

Mykola Shaparenko equalized in the 54th minute with a close-range finish, coming from Oleksandr Zinchenko’s cross.

Substitute Roman Yaremchuk sealed Ukraine’s game-winning goal in the 80th minute, following a lofted pass from Shaparenko.

This marks Ukraine’s first come-from-behind Euro win since their 2-1 victory against Sweden in 2012.

“They showed the spirit of Ukraine”

Ukraine manager Sergiy Rebrov said his players “showed the spirit” of the country from their second-half comeback.

“This is not a different team,” Rebrov said afterwards. “There was different spirit — I am pleased for the players — they showed the spirit of Ukraine and deserved this win. It was important to win for our country, our fighters, our supporters.”
